CUB links Ibsen's dramas to Bangladesh issues; Norwegian Embassy guests attend
Dhaka, September 30, 2025 – The Canadian University of Bangladesh’s (CUB) English Department successfully hosted a highly engaging academic seminar today, "Relevance of Henrik Ibsen to Bangladesh," exploring the enduring social and political resonance of the Norwegian playwright's work in the contemporary Bangladeshi context.

The seminar featured a compelling presentation by renowned scholar Professor Ahmed Ahsanuzzaman of IUB. Professor Ahsanuzzaman argued that Ibsen's powerful dramas, especially An Enemy of the People and A Doll's House, hold profound and sustained relevance to current sociopolitical issues in Bangladesh, particularly concerning themes of social critique and individual liberty. The academic discussion was brought to life by a short dramatic performance from A Doll’s House, presented by the English Department Drama Club.
The event was graced by special guests from the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Dhaka: Ms. Marianne Rabe Knævelsrud, Deputy Head of Mission, and Ms. Zohora Farzana Ahmed Bipasha, Communications and Culture Adviser. CUB’s Vice Chancellor was also present to encourage the students and faculty.
In her remarks, Ms. Knævelsrud appreciated the initiative, emphasizing the importance of such programs in fostering cultural and literary exchange between Norway and Bangladesh.
The stimulating seminar concluded with a vote of thanks by Department Chair Rezina Sultana, followed by a vibrant cultural program organized and performed by the students of the English Department.
